Friedrich Adolf Strauss

Friedrich Adolf Strauss was a German priest and professor from Berlin, who in 1844-46 travelled in the Orient and then published the book “Sinai und Golgatha” with a description of the Holy Land in 1846. He visited Jerusalem during the Easter 1845.

The book had a great impact on the interest of the Orient and was reprinted 11 times! (På svenska: Sinai och Golgata (1849), senare Den Heliga Skrifts Länder och Orter (1896)). He also founded a Jerusalem Society 1852 (Jerusalems Verein) in order to support the German Evangelical organizations working in the area.

Schick writes in his memories that Strauss visited Chrischona after his travel in the Orient and then suggested Schick to learn the skill of a “watchmaker”, while this knowledge was unknown in Jerusalem!

Strauss kept the words from Jeremiah 51:50 in his heart for the rest of his life: “Let Jerusalem be in your heart!”
