Christian Friedrich Spittler 1782 - 1867

C. F. Spittler from Württemberg, founded a number of organizations with social and missionary orientation, including the Basel Mission, Basel Bible Society, a Society for the Promotion of Christianity among the Jews, a home with education for Deaf, an institution for epileptics, the Basel University, Children’s Hospital and Deaconess Home in Riehen.

The number of organizations founded by Spittler counts about thirty!

One of his ideas was to create 12 “Apostle houses” on a road from Jerusalem to Ethiopia. He planned to send men or women two by two to form a Brotherhood on each place. Conrad Schick would be the first brother to be sent to Jerusalem 1846.
